Alopecia, hair loss or baldness

ALOPECIA, hair loss or baldness is a dermatological disorder of hair follicles. It is encountered both in women and men and can be associated with the existence of certain hereditary factors, the hormonal changes specific to age or other physiological conditions (for example, pregnancy) or medical conditions, with the presence of disorders or with certain treatments.

Types of alopecia

• Androgenetic Alopecia is a genetic disorder present both in men and in women. It is manifested by a rarefication of hair in frontal-parietal area. In men it can appear since teenage or since the age of 20 years old. In women it can be associated with the polycystic ovary syndrome and usually appears after 40 years old, the main manifestation is the thinness of the hair on the whole scalp. It is considered that it appears more often in men, but also women at menopause are frequently affected.
• Alopecia areata is a self-immune disorder. It is a circumscribed alopecia, which means that it is manifested by the presence of plaques on scalp without hair at all. Alopecia areata has a complex pathogeny and the evolution of disorder is unpredictable.
• Scarring hair loss, also known as cicatricial alopecia, is characterized by the destruction of hair follicle and by forming the fibrous tissue.

Diagnosis

For a correct diagnosis, your doctor will examine you and will recommend you some tests:

• Blood tests. They are indicated in order to discover potential medical causes of hair loss. For instance, we can determine certain hormonal levels: testosterone, dihydrotestosterone.
